Service Description: One of 11 regional systems established to implement the Ontario Stroke System * goal is to improve access to evidence-based prevention and care in order to reduce stroke incidence, mortality and residual disability * provides presentations to the public, service clubs, retirement homes and all health care providers in addressing the risks following stroke

District Stroke Centres differ from community hospitals in that they are organized to facilitate the use of tPa for acute ischemic stroke on an around the clock basis * tPA (tissue plasminogen activator) is a type of thrombolytic drug, often referred to as clot busters
